Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic body treatment that dates back to over 5,000 years ago. This ancient therapy involves a stream of warm oil flowing over your forehead and scalp. It brings a deep sense of calmness and relaxation to the client and induces stillness in the mind. “Shiro” in Sanskrit means “head,” and “dara” means “flow.”
Shirodhara Better Explained
Traditionally, shirodhara is used as part of the cleansing and detoxing panchakarma process. We offer it at CentreSpring Spa as a standalone treatment that compliments the holistic therapy of the main office. It is non-invasive, non-irritating to the skin and is very gentle.
After a brief consultation, the client will receive a brief massage on the scalp, back, neck, shoulders and face. The therapist will bring the apparatus next to the table and begin the flow of specially made, verbalized oil onto the forehead. This part lasts 15-20 minutes. Once the oil flow stops, the therapist will massage the oil into the scalp while assisting the client to a seated position.
Shirodhara addresses the emotions of stress and anxiety by offering a gentle stimulation to the nervous system in hopes of reestablishing the mind-body connection. When our brain perceives the oil flowing onto our agni, or third eye, it begins to release chemicals that create a stillness in the mind and calmness in the body. This is very pivotal for clients suffering from high anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, hair loss, migraines, depression or exhaustion.
I suggest trying the shirodhara treatment on a day or evening when you can completely do nothing stressful or be in an environment where is little noise and/or activity. If you ate feeling any physical stress, I also suggest pairing it with a massage or facial to get the most relaxation possible.
